Radical concept developed in California features removable cockpit, augmented reality technology, and pure Corvette DNA
General Motors has just stunned enthusiasts with the reveal of the California Corvette Concept, the second in a trilogy of design studies that reimagine the legendary Chevrolet Corvette. Developed by the GM Advanced Design studio in Pasadena (California), this conceptual hypercar was unveiled as part of the automaker’s global design strategy, impressing with its radical look, innovative solutions, and inspiration from Southern California’s automotive culture.
“This concept is a tribute to the legendary performance of the Corvette, but with a new interpretation of the future and freedom,” said Bryan Nesbitt, GM’s vice president of global design.
The California Corvette is not planned for production — but it could be a glimpse into the Corvettes of the future. The concept features a removable cockpit with a single-piece canopy and front hinges, allowing the car to transform from a closed sports coupe into an open, ultralight track car in seconds.
Design and technology highlights
The hypercar showcases extreme proportions, with wide wheels (21″ front, 22″ rear), a tapered body, and a lowered driving position, thanks to a “T”-shaped battery that enhances airflow through the chassis. An active aerodynamic spoiler and aerodynamic brake adjust performance at high speeds.
Inside, the focus is entirely on the driver: with exposed structure, minimalist finishes, and an augmented reality HUD, the interior is designed for immersive track experiences — displaying only essential data.
“We wanted something that represented the spirit of SoCal while also having global reach. This concept is the perfect balance between heritage and provocation,” said Brian Smith, director of the Pasadena studio.
